But What Can I Do?

Posted in Pastor's Blog.

As Bible believing Christ followers in our secular progressive society, it is easy to feel completely frustrated and isolated when it comes to important moral social issues.
Abortion...Sexuality...Living Together....Marriage...Gay Marriage...Social Justice...Transgender Restrooms...and the list goes on.

How do I keep up with critical current social issues?
How can I address these issues with my children, family and friends?
What difference can I make? What can I do?

The apostle Paul understood what we would face in our day, as it was in his day. The same encouragement he gave to the church at Ephesus, he gives to us today. Instead of lamenting the state of our culture, we must face it and take every opportunity to be salt and light in it.

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”
-Ephesians 5:15-17-

Some have taken the position that we should not openly take a position or a stand on these issues in fear that we smudge the name of Christianity with stains of bigotry and intolerance. Unfortunately, there are those who seem to think ‘shouting’ in shrill voices at the ‘opposition’ is a Christian’s proper approach. Of course this is not the proper approach to our sinful culture. However, we might be careful not to err in thinking this means that we must take no stand at all. Hardly! Amidst the shrill voices of social progressivism, we have the unique opportunity to share the Truth in love with confidence, bathed in His mercy and love! Believe and act differently than the world around us.

What is a good resource with solid Biblical guidelines and perspectives on these issues? While no particular organization holds the corner on truth, and there are numerous good sources out there, Focus on the Family continues to deliver exceptionally well in a practical, culturally informed and relevant way. You may be familiar with them from years back, but you might be surprised at how sensitive and relevant they have become. You can check them out at http://www.focusonthefamily.com/http://www.focusonthefamily.com/

This chart is one example of the helpful resources found at Focus on the Family ... It demonstrates how fathers and mothers bring different components to the family. God has designed mom and dads with a special purpose. (see Matthew 19:4.)
